GENERAL JURY DUTY INFORMATION
The Circuit Clerk is responsible for the administration and management of the Jury System and provides jury panels for 3 Circuit Court Judges, 5 Magistrate and 3 Municipal Courts. The Clerk creates the master list of prospective jurors, randomly selects panels for attendance, qualifies and summons the jurors and monitors attendance and mileage for reimbursement purposes. Mercer County jurors are chosen by either WV Drivers License or Voters Registration.
GRAND JURY
A Petit Jury in criminal cases determines the guilt or innocense of a defendant. A guilty verdict must be by unanimous vote. Twelve (12) people are impaneled to sit as jurors on a criminal trial.Petit Jury in civil cases decided between the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s) as to an issue between the parties. Civil Jurors must also be unanimous in their decision. Six (6) people are impaneled to sit on a civil trial.

“Petit Jurors” are summoned twice in each of the February, June and October Terms. We refer to these jurors as February Petit, February Additional Petit, June Petit, June Additional Petit, October Petit and October Additional Petit. The terms of service last approximately 8 weeks. A jury orientation is held for each set of new jurors at the beginning of their respective terms. After Orientation, Mercer County uses an automated contact system by which you are contacted by phone, text message or email and instructed when and where you are to report. Be prepared to supply your preferred contact information at your orientation.
“Grand Jurors” are summoned three (3) times a year: February, June and October. The term of service for Grand Jury is about 16 weeks; however, generally speaking, Mercer County Grand Jurors serve 3 consecutive days at the most beginning the second Monday of February, June and October.IF YOU RECEIVE a summons for Petit or Grand Jury, it is most important that you complete the questionnaire and return it to the Court; Immediately mark your calendar for your Orientation Date and appear as summoned.
